Order the carpaccio gamberi (raw local shrimp) or the zucchini with shrimp and any simply grilled fish. Sun-Dappled Lunch Just a ten-minute drive south of Agua Beach, you can have a proper sit-down meal in Marzamemi at the seaside Taverna La Cialoma. One great option is to rent lounge chairs and umbrellas at the Agua Beach Resort, in San Lorenzo Noto, for just $12 a day stay for a light lunch, like a plate of flavorful Pachino tomatoes with mozzarella. A little farther south are San Lorenzo Beach and Calamosche in the Vendicari Nature Reserve, a protected haven where flamingos, herons, and storks are more populous than humans and the pale aqua waters are calm and clean. The ones closest to town, Eloro-Pizzuta and Eloro, run right into the ruins of the seventh-century b.c. Within 5 to 12 miles of central Noto are some of the most secluded sandy beaches not just in Sicily but in all of Italy. Spiaggia Marianelli, a secluded beach with lagoons and empty dunes in the Vendicari Nature Reserve. Be sure to request a car with GPS since reception can be spotty if you’re reliant on Google Maps (especially with a limited data plan).

Fortunately, the main highways-like the A18, which connects Catania to Syracuse and Noto-are smoothly paved. You will need to rent a car, which is easy enough to do at either airport. It’s easiest if you get a flight into Catania, just over an hour from Noto, though many international flights land in Palermo (three hours away). Noto and its neighbors make sightseeing, especially with little ones, feel serendipitous rather than onerous. (As many of us can attest, luring an eight-year-old through the Papal Apartments in Vatican City during an infernal August afternoon can make you never want to get on a plane with a child again.) Until you are in Noto, though, it’s hard to imagine just how close neighboring historic towns like Modica and Ragusa-and any number of Ancient Greek ruins and unspoiled beaches-are to the town center and to each other.

This planned urban landscape-completed between 17-is a festival of orderly baroque exuberance, with churches, palazzi, and open spaces carefully laid out with 18th-century theatrical flair.Īfter years of general decay, weathering of the golden tufa building stone, and earthquakes that damaged the fabric of Noto's baroque palazzi and churches, a 1986 engineering report that declared the entire city was in danger of collapsing.

The original Noto was so utterly destroyed in Sicily's 1693 earthquake that the Duke decided to bag the whole thing and had the city rebuilt from scratch about six miles away, engaging architects Rosario Gagliardi, Vicenzo Sinatra, and Paolo Labisi for the monumental job. Noto is the single best example of baroque urban planning in existence, currently on the road to recovery after years of decay that culminated in the 1996 collapse of the cathedral dome.
